RFID thinktank IDTechEx reports that item-level tagging - once thought impossible, as tag costs seem to have bottomed out - is happening faster than most realize.
Item level tagging refers to the tagging of the smallest taggable unit of things. Thus, a single book, versus a carton of books.
IDTechEx believes 200 million tags will be used in 2006 for item level tagging alone, chiefly in apparel, books and drugs, among other applications.
They expect it to be the world's largest RFID market by value in 2007, rising to a value of $11 billion for tags and all systems of a $26 billion RFID market in 2016.
